Find Fido Should He Flee on the Fourth

Updated: Jun 23

Dog on the Fourth of July

Let’s face it. No dog is a fan of fireworks. There are many of our American traditions that our furry friends may love on the Fourth of July, like family time, swimming in the lake and barbecue, but as dusk sets in and fireworks start to boom, it can get downright terrifying for our pups. There are many things we can do to make them comfortable on this holiday, but equally important is making sure they are properly tagged and trackable before the fireworks set in.

Strikingly, animal control offices across the United States report an approximately 30 percent(!) increase in lost pets each year between July 4th and July 6th! It’s heartbreaking to think of our furry loved ones disappearing in utter fear, so taking measures to ensure that they can be tracked and quickly returned to us, should this happen, is an important to-do list item for any pet-owner prior to the Fourth. What are some precautionary measures that we can take to ensure we can find Fido should he flee on the Fourth of July?

  • Have your dog microchipped. If you’ve already done this, check to be sure that the information you have linked to your pup is up-to-date. Further, should you find a dog without ID, please take him ASAP to a vet or animal shelter to check for a microchip in order to return him to his family.

  • Make sure your dog has an identification tag, again, with up-to-date information.

  • For iPhone users, the Apple Airtag is an easy way to track your dog, assuming reception is good in your area. Pair your Airtag with an Airtag dog collar, and you’ll be able to track your pup’s location from your iPhone.

  • While GPS is very useful, it doesn’t work everywhere. MyLuckyTag uses different technology—a QR code on the back of the tag that will send you your dog’s location when scanned. This tag also includes your identification info on it as well.

You can imagine the fear and panic of finding yourself without your beloved pup midway through your Fourth of July celebration. Be sure to take precautions to guarantee the comfort and security of your furry friends on this holiday as well ensuring that you can find his or her whereabouts at the drop of a hat, or at the rocket’s red glare, as the case may be. Ensuring safety during this holiday is yet another way to express love for our pets; and remember: there’s no love like puppy love!
